The Atari 2600 was released by Atari Inc. in 1978 as the video computer system. The gaming system proved so popular that it was even manufactured for Sears and sold under the Telegame Video Arcade. Atari released the 5200 gaming system wth much improved graphics abilities over the 2600 but despite this the 2600 remained the flagship product of Atari until the video game crash of 83/84. Atari's chief competitor's Coleco and Mattel released an adapter which would plug into each of their system's cartridges to allow their games to play on the 2600. Even Atari's chief console competitors were making games for the 2600! It's no wonder that the 2600 in its heyday had the widest selection of game titles.
