The Lynx Gaming System

The Atari Lynx was the world's first color handheld video gaming system. Multiplayer abilities were built into the system via the comlynx cables that could connect up to 8 players in head to head competition. The system's screen display could be reveresed in such a way as to allow right handed players and lefties to play games with equal advantage. The system was capable of displaying 16 different colors on screen out of a possible 4096. In addition hardware based scaling and rotation features were built into the system.

The Lynx contains 64K (half a megabit) of 120ns DRAM.

Powered by a cigarette lighter adapter, AC Adapter, Alkaline or Nicad batteries (4 to 5 hours)

160 x 102 standard resolution (16,320 pixel dsplay)

12 bit color pallete 4096 colors possible colors

16 color on screen display

The Lynx had two basic chips that formed a cooperative co-processing subsystem
that maximized the Lynx's performance by sharing the work of game program.execution

8 bit CPU (MOS 65C02 processor running at up to 4MHz approximately 3.6MHz average;
referred to as Mikey)

16-bit custom CMOS chip running at 16MHz (referred to as Suzy)
