Throughout the Rocky saga Rocky has
always represented the under dog. He fought more
than just his physical equals; for each of his
opponents was a superior champion. Only with
heart, dedication and an unmatchable will to win
is Rocky able to prevail. Rocky fights Apollo
Creed twice and develops a lifelong friendship
with this once bitter rival as time goes on. Rocky fights against Mr T in Rocky 3.
Rocky's opponent trains hard and is known for his
speed. Rocky trains with his friend Apollo Creed.
In the match Rocky proclaims "It's not so
bad" as he continues to take blow after blow
from his rival. But then his opponent
swings with greater confidence and an opening
emerges; an opening through which Rocky lands
punch after punch until he is proclaimed champion
once more.
Rocky fights the fight of his
life against the Russian Ivan Drago. Ivan Drago
kills Rocky's friend Apollo Creed in an
"exhibition match." Rocky agrees to a
rematch to try to honor Apollo Creed's death. The
match is in Russia. While Ivan Drago uses state
of the art equipment and training facilities
Rocky prefers to train with less sophisitcated
methods. He chops wood, runs, and builds a
variety of homemade training devices. Rocky
fights like a piece of iron oblivious to pain.
There is "No Pain" as he so confidently
states throughout the match. In the battle of
east versus west Rocky wins the hearts of both
east and west. True heros are known as ideals in
every land and Rocky exists as a true hero in
this sense.
